The intent of this blog is to chronicle the opening of a coffee shop designed to employ people with disabilities in the hopes that it may help others wanting to start a similar venture.
Since summer 2017 we've been on the hunt for a property to place our coffee shop. From the beginning we have been looking at downtown Burlington, Vermont; in particular in the Church Street Marketplace. There are 4 coffee shops on Church Street, and 4 more within 3 blocks of the pedestrian mall. There are also a number of restaurants, doughnut shops and at least one tea shop.
At first glance that may seem like a lot of competition, but every coffee shop has been in continuous operation for the past 20 years with the occasional name change. There hasn't been a new one on the pedestrian mall during that time despite the increase in traffic and the year-over-year increase in specialty coffee sales.
